MEDITERRANEAN, SEA OF PEACE,AND FREE OF NUCLEAR

During the conference “Mediterranean, Peace and Nonviolence” in September 2018 in Palermo, stimulated by the second edition of the World March for Peace and Nonviolence (Madrid, 2/10/2019 – Madrid, 8/3/2020) we tried to give life to a project that is the result of the union of several realities and experiences, and motivated by the deep desire for the Mediterranean to truly become a Sea of Peace.

THE OBJECTIVES

• To elaborate and achieve the signing of a Mediterranean Treaty for a sea of peace and free of nuclear weapons, inspired by the Barcelona Declaration.
• To create conditions for the Mediterranean Sea and its coastal countries to become a nuclear-weapon-free zone and to eliminate research, production, storage and transport of nuclear weapons in airspace, on land, at sea and underground.  In the direction of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which entered into force on 22 January 2021.
• Promote solidarity between coastal countries to find solutions to existing (Syria, Libya, Palestine…) or latent problems and conflicts.
• In a broader sense, to turn the Mediterranean into an area of integration, exchange, collaboration and use of the experience and accumulated knowledge of its millenary peoples.
• Promote initiatives to protect the environment in general and the coastal marine environment in particular.
• Protect and make the most of common goods, first and foremost water.
• Promote a real, solidarity-based and sustainable economy in its development. 
• Promote a culture of peace and non-violence through training and educational activities in schools, universities and cultural associations.
