World without Wars and Violence is one of 650 partner organizations of the ICAN campaign, as well as activists from some 110 countries.
ICAN is a broad and inclusive global campaign, focused on mobilizing civil society around the world to support the specific goal of prohibiting and eliminating nuclear weapons.
It is the campaign that helped bring about the adoption and entry into force of the historic Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which the UN adopted in July 2017, banning all nuclear weapons-related activities: testing, building, financing and even threatening to use nuclear weapons.
The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons entered into force on 22 January 2021. https://www.icanw.org/the_treaty
There are currently 93 signatories and 73 States Parties that have ratified it. https://www.icanw.org/signature_and_ratification_status
In the blink of an eye, a nuclear detonation will wipe a metropolitan centre off the map, wiping out countless lives, destroying all infrastructure and poisoning the environment. This is not hypothetical: cities are prime targets for nuclear weapons.
Therefore, on the ICAN Director’s visit to Madrid in 2018, WwW proposed to her to broaden the support of municipalities for the treaty. In this way, cities are also acting to put pressure on their national governments to adhere to the treaty and are committing themselves by signing Cities Appeal. https://cities.icanw.org/
In addition, to raise awareness in civil society, WwW collaborated in the production of the documentary produced by Pressenza ‘The beginning of the end of nuclear weapons’, whose dissemination it promotes as it is available to groups and the public. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inaJXv4PWoU
